Leadership of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Visits the Institute of Applied Control Systems: Focus on Innovation and Defense Technologies

On April 16, 2026, the Institute of Applied Control Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS of Ukraine) received a working visit from Anatoliy Zagorodny, President of the NAS of Ukraine and Academician of the NAS of Ukraine; Vyacheslav Bohdanov, First Vice-President of the NAS of Ukraine, Head of the Section of Physical, Technical, and Mathematical Sciences, and Academician of the NAS of Ukraine; Oleksandr Khimich, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Informatics and Academician of the NAS of Ukraine; Stella Shekhunova, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences and Academician of the NAS of Ukraine; Serhiy Bespalov, Scientific Secretary of the Section of Physical, Technical, and Mathematical Sciences and Doctor of Technical Sciences; and Olha Horokhovatska, Scientific Secretary of the Department of Informatics and Candidate of Historical Sciences.

The guests were welcomed by Stanislav Dovhyi, Chairman of the Institute’s Academic Council and Academician of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine; Oleh Kopiika, Director of the Institute and Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine; Viktor Yehorov, Deputy Director for Research and Doctor of Technical Sciences; and Alla Stryzhak, Scientific Secretary and PhD.

The Institute is a research institution primarily focused on innovation regarding the development of promising Industry 4.0 technologies (robotics, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and information and communication technologies). These technologies form the foundation of cyber-physical systems that fully automate production facilities, where all processes are managed in real time with minimal human intervention.

The Institute also collaborates with the National Center "Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine" to promote a unified methodology for innovation and the application of scientific education principles.

In his address, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Stanislav Dovhyi focused particularly on the Institute’s core objectives: conducting fundamental and applied research and scientific-innovation activities, and bringing the results to the stage of industrial implementation.

The Institute’s Director, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Oleh Kopiika, briefed the guests on the institution’s activities, structure, human resources, and primary research areas. He highlighted key achievements in science, experimental development, and publications; collaboration between researchers and industrial enterprises; work with young scientists; and international activities—specifically partnerships with UN bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union and UNESCO. He also discussed current challenges and strategies to address them, while outlining future prospects for the Institute’s development.

Particular attention was paid to the activities of two innovation hubs—"Information and Communication Systems and Additive Technologies" and "Robotic Systems"—which were highlighted within the framework of measures for cooperation between NAS of Ukraine institutions and domestic research-and-production enterprises, as well as for the development of innovation activities, as approved by Resolution No. 193 of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine dated June 4, 2025. Projects of national significance, carried out through collaboration within these hubs, were presented.

The Academy’s leadership reviewed the scientific results of the Institute's work. Additionally, Senior Researcher Bohdan Dovhyi spoke about the development of additive technologies for manufacturing complex products using artificial intelligence.

Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine Oleh Kopiika and Senior Researcher Volodymyr Kalinin reviewed the results of work carried out under the state order.

Deputy Director and Doctor of Technical Sciences Viktor Yehorov reported on the development of high-tech robotic systems incorporating artificial intelligence for special-purpose tasks, while Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Mykyta Myrontsov discussed the application of artificial intelligence elements across various fields of activity.

Senior Researcher Svitlana Babiichuk outlined the potential for using Earth remote sensing tools, particularly for monitoring the consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

To showcase the practical implementation of the Institute's scientific achievements, an exhibition of equipment based on in-house developments was presented during the meeting. Featured items included: an AI-powered unmanned aerial system; an AI-based object and target recognition and classification station; a training system based on the Dobot MG400 for technical higher education institutions; a robot simulating palletizing operations based on UR technology; a bionic hand prosthesis; a CR-5 manipulator; 3D printers; a 3D scanner; and others.

In addition, an exhibition of publications by the Institute’s researchers was held.

Summarizing the visit, the Academy’s leadership noted that the Institute of Applied Control Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine carries out important work in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, and additive technologies to meet state needs. It was specifically highlighted that few institutes within the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are capable of implementing scientific developments in the real sectors of the economy with such speed. The Academy’s leadership also emphasized the Institute’s significant contribution to enhancing the country's defense capabilities.
